What is an SSL certificate & how does it work?
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It’s the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private.
Who needs an SSL?
SSL is a simple but essential way to keep sensitive information safe while giving your visitors the confidence they need to interact on your website. Whether it is submitting a contact form or completing a transaction online. Recently, Google announced that they prefer secured sites, giving anyone who protects their website a boost in search engine rankings.
How do you know if a site is secured?
Addresses of secured pages start with https:// as opposed to http://. Most web browsers will also display a padlock when you’re viewing a site over a secure connection. In the case of an Extended Validation certificate, the browser bar will also turn green and display the site’s credentials.
What is a Wildcard Certificate?
This is a certificate that is applied to a domain and all its subdomains, for example “” would be considered a subdomain of “”. A conventional SSL certificate works on a single domain.
What information is needed for a DV certificate?
You do not need to provide any documentation in order to purchase a Domain Validated (DV) certificate. All you will need to do is confirm that you own the domain you wish to cover, either through a simple email or file-based authentication.
What information is needed for an OV certificate?
Organization Validated (OV) verification requires checking your business registration. If the Certificate Authority (CA) can verify this information using online government databases, no additional documents will be required. However, if the online filings are not available, inaccurate or not up to date, the CA may request additional official government registration documents, which vary on a case-by-case basis. A Dun & Bradstreet listing can usually satisfy most of the requirements for an OV certificate.
Does SSL work with all browsers?
Our certificate authority, i.e. Comodo/Thawte, has ensured that our certificates work on 99.3% of all browsers. In essence, this is every major web browser, including Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer and Safari.
