It’s World Kindness Day, and although it’s been a hell of a year and we’re collectively fatigued at this point, there’s always time to show a little tenderness. The year 2020 ushered in the global pandemic COVID-19, economic destruction, isolation, and a lot of loss. The world needs kindness now more than ever.
What is World Kindness Day?
World Kindness day came about in 1998, and the day aims to promote kindness globally. The day is observed annually on the 13th of November – which this year, falls coincidentally on Friday the 13th.
What is the purpose of World Kindness Day?
The directive of World Kindness Day is to highlight good deeds in the community and to display how a single act of kindness can have a ripple effect and binds us as humans. The World Kindness Movement describes the purpose as:
“To highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.”
How do you celebrate World Kindness Day?
Indulge in self-care
The first person you need to be kind in is yourself. You can’t give from an empty cup and taking care of yourself first should be your top priority before taking care of everyone else. There are small things you can do to show kindness to yourself like:
- Drinking more water
- Partake in some form of exercise or physical activity
- Get sufficient rest
- Do things that make you happy like reading or lighting scented candles
Kindness starts at home
Make being kind part of your family values. Teach your children with your actions to be kind and show tenderness to your partner, spouse and family.
- Have wholesome fun at home
- Eat at the dinner table and ask how your family member’s day was
- Incorporate small gestures of kindness to your home
Do random acts of kindness in your community
Lend a helping hand wherever you can, in your community. From taking a minute to greet your neighbours and having conversations to donating your time or money to a local charity, there are a variety of ways to be kind.
- Support local businesses
- Give to families in need
- Provide work opportunities to people in your community who need it
Be kind to the environment
Kindness also extends to the environment and nature. We only have one planet, and we need to do our part in preserving it for future generations. Here are a few ways to be kind to the environment:
- Recycle: everyone should be recycling anyway
- Save electricity: in a country like South Africa, we should all work together to save as much electricity as we can
- Save water
Lastly, you can show kindness and consideration for fellow humans by wearing a mask in public spaces, adhering to social distance regulations and washing your hands regularly.
