Today we’re profiling Bermont Digital, a South African Software Development Agency based in Cape Town. Being entrusted with big campaigns and e-commerce websites by some of the biggest brands globally, co-founders Luke Seeber and Stefano Montanari lead with innovation and an always thinking forward approach.

We sat down with the duo and asked them some questions about their business. 

Tell us more about your business?

Bermont Digital is a software agency based in Cape Town. We build custom web-based software solutions for clients across the globe. With a focus on eCommerce solutions, our goal is to add value and solve complex issues for our clients who sell online.

Why did you start your business?

I started our business to help South African companies to be able to sell their products and services online. The online landscape is a competitive one, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out as a business online. The goal is to provide businesses with solutions to their online needs, by creating bespoke websites, that are optimised for the digital landscape we call the World Wide Web.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when starting your business?

I think the biggest challenge with starting our business has been trying to balance the work for our clients and working on our business. There is a constant struggle between which takes priority and making time to grow the business. But at the same time making sure the work you are doing gets finished promptly. I think a lot of entrepreneurs struggle with this, and it requires self-awareness and the ability to prioritise your time.

What challenges has the business faced as a result of COVID-19 and the lockdown in SA?

A big struggle for myself has been having to work from home and working with my team remotely; it has been a big adjustment and figuring out how to plan and communicate effectively via remote services. Luckily, with the industry that we are in, I am very grateful to have a lot of work still coming in as the demand for online services has increased due to COVID-19. 

When did you move your business online?

Our business was online from day one, due to the nature of our business and our skill set, we were able to set ourselves up online.


What advice do you have for people who want to start their businesses?

This is a difficult question as there is so much involved when it comes to starting your business. I think the single best piece of advice I can give is that you need to push through the tough times, the ups and downs. Don’t give up. Sometimes things don’t work out as planned, but it is ok to make mistakes, fail quickly and learn from those failures. The success part is easy, but being able to take feedback and criticism, and then put that feedback into action is difficult but crucial when running your own business.

Where did you hear about 1-grid?

I heard about 1-grid when they initially split from Web Africa and I think there was an article on MyBroadband that I initially read about 1-grid and their services.

What made you choose 1-grid?

I have worked with quite a few service providers in South Africa due to clients coming to me with existing websites or having relationships with existing providers. The first time I used 1-grid was from a client who asked me to build their site on the 1-grid platform. And from then I have had a great experience and come back for more services, and put clients onto the 1-grid platform.

In summary, what is your impression of 1-grid?

I have had an excellent experience working with 1-grid; from customer support that was able to help solve customer needs in a short time, as well as having access to reliable services. I don’t need to contact the customer support much, but when I did, it has been a smooth process. Another note is the server performance, I have had an outstanding experience with the quality of the infrastructure, and the performance has been great. A lot of clients don’t realise how much of a difference the Server performance can impact their business, but it is critical when providing an excellent customer experience. Great server response times and low latency has been a crucial factor when using 1-grid.

Would you recommend 1-grid to your friends and family?

I would recommend 1-grid to my friends, family and clients. With a diverse range of solutions depending on your business needs. Contact their sales team who will be able to point you to the right services for your needs. I am looking to expanding our offerings and utilising 1-grid as a services partner for our business. We are building some unique software applications and will be using local infrastructure to do so.
