The global pandemic has presented small registered businesses, big industries and society as a whole with enormous challenges. Lockdown level 5 had the most stringent regulations – many nonessential service businesses had to close their doors indefinitely. Itumeleng Lekomamyane’s budding sandwich business, Sandwich Nton Ntons, is one of the many small businesses that had to cease operations during the height of the pandemic lockdown.

We profiled Sandwich Nton Ntons and helped him take his business online with a beautifully designed business website by one of our professional website designers. The country has since gone through massive changes, and he has resumed operations within the lockdown level 2 guidelines. We caught up with Itumeleng to ask him a few questions ranging from how the lockdown impacted business to advise that he would give to aspiring entrepreneurs.

What challenges has the business faced as a result of COVID-19 and the lockdown in SA?

The business isn’t where it used to be pre-COVID19; it feels like we’re starting all over again. We had a considerable drop in sales, which meant that decreased significantly. We had to reduce staff members, and as a result, production was low. There was also a noticeable increase in supplier prices.

Has your online presence helped your business through the COVID-19 pandemic?

Yes, it has helped with brand recognition, not being online we would’ve run the risk of people forgetting about us.

When did you move your business online?

We got online in February 2020.

What were some of your biggest challenges when you started your business?

There were many obstacles like finding a place to sell the sandwiches from, fighting off security guards who protected some areas, altercations with Johannesburg metro police department and of course the lack of capital or funding.

What advice do you have for people who want to start their own businesses?

The most important thing is to actually start, stop procrastinating on an idea that’s been on your mind for a while, execution is essential, go out there and get yourself recognized.
